Controversial Figures in Modern Ninjutsu

Ninjutsu is a Japanese style of martial arts that focuses on using the stealth and deception. These techniques are used for self-defense or fulfilling of an objective. There are many ninja theories nowadays and on one is sure which one is real and authentic. Here is a list of some popular Ninjutsu masters whose claims are disputed.

Masaaki Hatsumi

In March 1958 Hatsumi was named the 34th Grand Master of Tigakure Ryu Ninjutsu tradition. He studied under Takashi Ueno from 24 to 29 years of age. Masaaki trained with his master once in 3 months period. According to another source, it was reported that there was a close friendship between Hatsumi and Yumio Nawa. Hatsumi has trained under the tutelage of Toshitsugu Takamatsu for 15 years. He became the master of 9 schools at the age of 27. Masaaki has nominated not to pass the system to an heir. But according to the editor of Bugeicyo magazine these claims has no proof.

Jinchi Kawakami

Jinchi studied with Masazo Ishida and is the founder of Banke Shinobionden School. He is the 21st Grand Master of the Koga-Ban clan and the honorary director of the Iga-Ryu Ninja Museum. Kawakami operates a dojo in Sagamihara-shi, Kanagawa Prefecture. But no new students are taught. Yasushi Kiyomoto is a teacher at the school, he was the student of Kawakami. Though there is no information regarding Ishida, so there is no evidence of this claim.

Frank Dux

Frank is a martial artist who established the modern school of Ninjutsu, Dux Ryu Ninjutsu in 1975. According to him, he trained in Koga Yamabuhsi Ninjutsu by Senzo Tanaka. His style of Ninjutsu is a not considered as koryu. But still, is claimed to be part of Koga Ninja core values.

However, the validity of Dux’ claims that have been disputed contains his martial arts qualifications, prior military service and fighting in Kumite. According to the Los Angeles Time reporter, Frank served in the military fro few months. He did into serving in Southeast Asia and won no medal. The service record states that Dux had been referred for psychiatric evaluation. The reason is the flights of ideas and exaggerations.

Roger Small

Roger Small is a martial artist with many years of experience in the art of Ninjutsu. Along with this, he has experience in other Far Eastern fighting arts. As far as Ninjutsu is concerned he never claimed that Jinkage-Ryu Ninpo Bugei School is a Koryu School. This quite surprising as most of the practitioners of Ninjutsu makes these claims. The school teaches the techniques from a modern perspective.  But the core principles of these techniques are based on Ninpo-Taijutsu.

Radford Davis

Radford Davis is also known as Ashida Kim and there is no proof of where he trained. He wrote plenty of books about Ninjutsu, one of his books is Secrets of the Ninja. Kim demonstrated his knowledge about Ninjutsu in a video. He stated that all the first 5 styles learned in Goju Ryu, Wado Ryu, Korean martial arts, Shotokan and Isshin Ryu are same.

In 2003 he was associated with the Black Dragon Fighting Society when met its head, Count Dante. He reported that this society has descended from 6,000 years old Chinese School named Polestar School. This school has been preserving knowledge after the fall of Atlantis.
